Hetch Hetchy

Last Thursday we went for a hike into the Hetch Hetchy Valley in the Yosemite Park.  The valley is home to the Toulumne River which was damned up in the 1920's to provide water to San Francisco(soon to be my drinking water!!).

The dam empties into two different spots. They had it open full blast when we
were there due to heavy rains a few days before.

Here you can see the two waterfalls at the back of the Toulumne River.
Our plan was to hike to both of the falls.

To start the hike, we had to travel through a long cave in the side of the mountain that
leads you to the path.

The path to the falls starts out in the woods, where you walk along the river. After awhile it opens into fields and small streams you have to cross with man-made little rock paths. There are also small waterfalls that you encounter that were made by the last rain and snow.

Along the way you can see the mountain range that closes in on the river.

Unfortunately, we could only view the falls from a distance. For one, the path was flowing with small waterfalls. It was like someone opened up a dozen fire hydrants! Second, the park rangers closed down the path due to two deaths. Apparently, two guys were swept into the falls of the third picture the day before. Both died but they only recovered one body as the second is still missing(so much for clean San Fransisco water!). My best guess is that a bear had a very good lunch! Speaking of bears, the best part of the hike was on our return as we saw a mama black bear and her two baby cubs!!

I was able to take a short video of the bears but it's not the greatest. Part way through, one of the little ones started to come toward me and I had to back up. Didn't want to piss off mama bear!
