Chena Hot Springs

On my last day in Fairbanks I drove to one of the most talked about spots there: Chena Hot Springs. They have several natural hot springs both indoors and out as well as snowmobiling, hiking, dog sledding, and an ice museum.

Gorgeous sunrise.

I stopped along the way at a small hiking trail to look around. The sun was still rising and it was just starting to hit the frosted trees on a mountain in front of me. It made for an interesting light show in the trees. Sorry for the unsteadiness of the camera, it was about -6 degrees.

Found Caribou tracks.

Serene river passing by.

Coldest I saw my entire time in Alaska!

Mr. Snowman being hugged by polar bears at the entrance to the hot springs.

They had some reindeer for viewing.

There are several pools located all over the springs. It has a slight sulfur/egg smell all around.

The ducks love it!!

This is the entrance to the ice museum. It kinda looks like the Hall of Justice from the old Justice League cartoon, no? :P

There are two sculptures who do all the carving for the museum, a husband and wife team. They have won many world champion ice carving competitions. Above are 300 pound blocks of ice they have brought in to work on. They also go out around the area during the spring when it just starts to thaw and find huge blocks of ice to bring back and work on as well.

When you buy a ticket to the museum, you can also purchase an "appletini" served to you in a ice glass for $15.

Ice glass being made.

They even did the checkerboard floor.

You'll notice on the bear there are different lines throughout his body. They are constantly having to touch up the sculptures, sometimes adding new parts.

Amazing detail!

A playable xylophone made of ice that changes color.

An ice bed. For a fee you can rent out the museum bed for the night.

An wedding alter. Yes, they hold weddings there as well.

Ice bar where your "appletini" is made.

Ice fireplace with additional seating.

Took a snowmobile ride before I left and saw another great sunset.

And I did get to see moose on the return ride but he would't turn around. Mostly I only saw moose ass in Alaska!

Another one far out on the ice.

And again another beautiful sunset.

Fairbanks Alaska

After coming back from Coldfoot, I had two days to wander around Fairbanks.

My rental "car"

I grabbed a coffee and headed out driving along College Ave in Fairbanks. I stumbled upon Creamer's Field a Migratory Waterfowl Refuge. The refuge has 2000 acres that are home to many different types of birds as well as animals.

Beautiful cold morning. Around 5 degrees if I remember correctly.

The farther I walked, the more I ended up in a low set of cloud cover.

While walking a trail I found a small amount of blood in the snow......

.......and then found that someone had had bird for breakfast!!

Zombie Frogs!!

Next I took a drive into downtown Fairbanks. Above is a statue called First Unknown Family.

The early "girls" of Fairbanks.

I also cruised down toward the small town of North Pole, Alaska...

 ...where Santa reins supreme!

And of course they have reindeer.

By the end of the day I ended up back in Fairbanks where I stopped off to take some photo's of the Chena River at
sunset with low clouds rolling in.

A good amount of the river had frozen solid on both sides. This was a piece that had broken off. So many layers.

Very peaceful.
